Memoirs of a Geisha

So I finally watched this movie tonight. With not much expectation I was actually a little eager to see this as I have heard mixed reviews of it. I have to admit that I had a hard time trying to listen to the English in some cases – which was especially true for the narrator. The heavy accents were a challenge even for me in some instances. The cinemetography was a little more pleasant to handle, although it didn’t do Kyoto any justice as its true beauty had ceased to show in this film.

I wondered why neither of the main female castings were Japanese. Could they not find a suitable Japanese lead role? I highly doubt that. Perhaps they opted to go for a big name cast and hoped for the best. More likely the case. Not that there is anything wrong with the actors, I feel that the film would have been a little more believable with a Japanese actress playing the lead.

There is not much else to say about this film except for the fact that I was only mildly impressed with the overall production. It seemed a bit lengthy at 2 hours and 24 minutes for at times I felt that things were dragging on a little too long. With difficult dialogue and mildly impressive cinematography, I now know why it got the ratings that it received. Well deserved, in my opinion.

Curry rice is good for your soul.

I’ve been having curry lately. A lot in fact. Today, I had two types of curry for lunch, and yet another type for dinner. My family has been experimenting with different curry recipes and it doesn’t seem to stop. Not that I mind of course. I love curry and trying new things out.

Indian curry seems pretty involved and is rather time consuming to make, but the reward is well worth the effort. Japanese curry has a different spiciness to it and is always one of my favourites. I’m quite happy with the instant curry mixes that House or S&B makes. I can’t have enough of them.

I haven’t been updating my blog as of late because I’ve been fairly occupied with U&I Magazine’s second issue, which has a deadline of this coming Monday. Will I be able to make it? I sure hope so. I foolishly set this deadline over the Chinese New Year’s weekend – unknowingly of course. I had to cancel my 48 disposable camera challenge since I don’t think I’ll be able to take anything worthwhile when I’m stuck in my room finishing up my magazine. This one’s going to be yet another fine product. Thanks for all your patience everyone!

From lighting to bananas

It was a day full of photography and one of my first outings since getting my D200. It was pretty fun as we all got together for some quick lessons on studio portraiture and lighting. While I don’t aspire to be a portrait photographer, it’s always nice to know a thing or two about lighting techniques, what they do and where to place reflectors, etc. Afterwards we all to eat at The Dumpling House, which specializes in none other than dumplings. It was my first time being there and I have to say it was pretty good. I’m surprised I haven’t been there before since it’s located right in the middle of China Town.

I foregoed to go to an opening for a photo exhibit where the rest of the gang went. Instead, I went to Richtree’s (formerly Marchés) at the BCE place with a fellow Flickr friend. Despite the long lineups, we nonchalantely walked inside since nobody was attending to us. We walked around and grabbed a table at the far back where we could easily be forgotten.

It wasn’t so much for the desserts that we went there but more likely the atmosphere I suppose. We just shared a rather large waffle with ice cream, bananas and chocolate drizzled all over. It was good. If my memory serves me correct, I think we must have been there for about 3-4 hours since we left pretty late. Me with my camera, and her with hers, we got some stares from the table next door who were celebrating a birthday party. They were friendly – one of them claiming to be Jennifer Lopez so that I would take a pic of her @ss! ;)

In any case, it was a good day of procrastination (for my magazine), and which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Thanks for some good times, people!

Kouhaku Utagassen (Red and White Festival)

I was watching the Red and White festival the other night. It’s an annual 3 hour music festival that is aired in Japan every New Year’s Eve. All the popular artists in pop and enka genres are divided into men (white) and women (red) and perform, oohing and awing the crowd. At the end of the show, the public and audience members vote on who they thought was the better side. This year the bragging rights went to the white side.

It was quite an interesting show as I managed to finally put a face to the names of the many artists that I listen to. I managed to catch some familiar names and was mildly entertained from it.

For female performers, I thought Ayumi Hamasaki’s Fairyland performance was less than perfect with her wavy tone and pitch throughout her performance. I thought BoA’s performance was better although not perfect. Koda Kumi’s song was probably one of the better ones in my opinion as I felt she knew what she was doing on stage – not to mention knowing how to dress with that rather unique outfit! I listen to Natsukawa Rimi now and then because I like her voice. I was happy to hear that familiar voice on stage. Doricamu (Dreams Come True) was still performing after all these years and while I thought Yoshida Miwa’s performance wasn’t at her peak, the duo still managed to pull off a good song that evening.

I don’t remember too much on the male side, other than the fact that SMAP’s rendition of Triangle wasn’t all very impressive and didn’t really deserve to be the last performance of the evening. KimuTaku is probably one of the better singers of the group – and I’m not saying that because he has the same name as me. There were too many rap and hip-hop performances on the male side to my liking so they didn’t really impress me all that much. I wonder why they won to begin with?

A notable performance was the Friends of Earth song sung by 4 people in Beijing. A Japanese female singer, a Chinese female, a Korean male and an English singing male made for an interesting ensemble. I have to say though, that the green coloured cheongsam the Chinese singer was wearing was absolutely beautiful. An A+ in my book!

I’m kind of surprised I even knew so many people in the show. The younger female emcee of the evening was the ever so popular YankumiGokusen (at least I think that’s it) that I watch a few months ago. She was elegant that evening with her 4 or 5 wardrobe changes throughout the night.

The show is no longer available here in Toronto on basic Cable. You can only see it if you have satellite TV, which I don’t have. So it’s kind of a shame that there are no sponsors to bring this to cable TV. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting 3 hours to spend once once a year. Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to catch it again next year!

Have any of you seen the show? What did you think about it?

The Nikon D200 Has Arrived

My Nikon D200 and 18-200mm lens came yesterday. I purchased it in early December and it finally came a month later.

As I only got it yesterday, I only had a little bit of time to play around with it. Seeing as I have a somewhat disturbing headache today, I didn’t end up playing with it too much. That and the fact that I watched March of the Penguins – which was a visually pleasing movie altogether.

My first impression of the D200 was that I was very behind my time when it came to digital photography. Sure I’ve played around with simple point and shoots but this beast was in a league of its own. Its sheer size indicates its dominance and power.

Mind you, this is really only my second digital camera that I have personally owned. My first digital camera was a Kodak DC265 Zoom, which produced whopping 900k images (i.e. less than 1 megapixel). That alone was the top of the line model at that time – almost about 7 or 8 years ago I would say.

While I can’t give this camera a full review, I have to say I really like what i’m seeing thus far. Quick response, easy navigation, and feature rich, I can definetely see myself using this for a long time. Although only 4 hours at a time! With the lens, holding this baby can get quite tiresome. Something I’ll just have to live with!

In any case, I will leave it at this as I think I will retire early this evening. My headache is not doing me any good while I’m awake.

Goodnight.
